FAQ’s

There are a lot more window types than you might imagine. You’ve probably seen most of these types of windows in your neighborhood or in the various homes you’ve lived in throughout your life. But it’s helpful to know them by name and not just by sight. Because the better informed you are, the better equipped you are to make the best window replacement decision for your home.

Let’s take a look.

Single Hung Windows

Single-hung windows are common original windows. They feature a bottom window sash that you can open and close up and down.

Double Hung Windows

Double-hung windows are one of the most common replacement windows. They have a top window sash that lowers, and a bottom window sash that you can raise. They also tilt in for easy cleaning.

Arched Windows

An arched window is a decorative window that is rounded on the top. It is fixed and does not open.

Awning Windows

Rectangular awning windows open at the bottom and push outwards. Some are equipped with a hand crank. They are excellent for providing ventilation.

Bay Windows

You would typically see bay windows in a living room area. They feature a large picture window in the middle with two angled windows on either side.

Bow Windows

Bow windows are similar to bay windows, but typically have 4 or more similarly sized windows each window is the same size. This creates a curved window.

Casement Windows

Casement windows have side hinges, and open either to the left or the right, much like a door. They generally operate using a hand crank.

Garden Windows

Garden windows project outwards, giving you space to place plants. They are a great replacement window for your kitchen.

Picture Windows

Picture windows are large fixed windows suitable for a living room, dining room, or sunroom. They can be paired with other windows to create a glass wall that highlights the outdoor scenery.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows do just that. They have two window sashes that slide open and closed on a track, much like your patio door.

Special Shapes

Special shapes run the gamut from round to hexagonal to octagonal to triangle and every shape in between. These decorative windows may be fixed, but some do have operational sashes…
