Roofing Companies: How to Find a Good Roofing Company
Your roof is one of the most important areas of your home. When it needs to be repaired or replaced you don’t want to trust it to just anybody. Finding a good roofing company takes a little time and diligence, but pays off in the end when you have a roofer you trust taking care of your roof.
Ideally, the best way to find a good roofing company is to ask around. If a friend or neighbor has recently had work done on their roof, find out the name of the company they worked with, and if they were satisfied with the job. This can help you narrow down your hunt, and gives you a chance to ask specific questions such as:
- The time it took to complete the job
- Did they show up and start work when they said they would?
- Was the final cost in line with the initial estimate?
- Did they clean up after themselves?
You should also find out what kind of shingles they used so you can find out more about them, and if this is the type you want to use on your own home.
Interview Three Roofing Companies
Ideally, you should take the time to interview and get estimates from three different companies. Find out what their experience is, if they are licensed and bonded in your state, what their insurance coverage is, and what kinds of guarantees they offer on their workmanship. They should also be able to give you some credit and personal references so you can ensure that they are going to do the kind of job you’re looking for.
You should also get the company information including address and phone number so you can check with the Better Business Bureau and sites like Angie’s List to learn more about the company.
Most roofing companies and contractors will have a portfolio of completed jobs you can take a look at. This can help you decide on the type of roofing material you ultimately go with, and lets you see examples of past work.
Get It in Writing
The roofing company you ultimately go with should give you everything you’ve discussed in writing, and in a timely way. This should include a written estimate with the cost breakdown for materials and labor. It should outline exactly what it is they are doing from a partial reroofing to removing and reroofing the entire home. It should also clearly state what their guarantee is for their workmanship, the date they intend to start, and when they intend to finish up. Any roofing company that can’t stand by their work or give you an estimate in writing is one that you will want to avoid.
Go With Someone You Trust
Ultimately, this company will be working on one of the most important areas of your home. You should be able to trust them completely, and feel good about the level of workmanship they will provide. When you find the right roofing company, you should feel as though your home is in the right hands.
