What To Do After Hail Storm Strikes- Burke, VA

What To Do After Hail Storm Strikes- Burke, VA

Residents of Burke, Virginia are no strangers to inclement weather. Things like high winds, rain, and snow sometimes bring other problems with them, including hail stones. It can be difficult and even frightening to figure out what you need to do after a hail storm. Damage isn’t always readily apparent, which makes it even more confusing; how can you tell if your roof or home has sustained serious damage that needs attention? And how do you determine if your insurance company will help pay for repairs? Thankfully, by investing in the help of a qualified local contractor, you can get the assistance and assurance you need to ensure your home is taken care of properly.

After a Hail Storm Strikes

If your home has been hit by a hail storm, and you see signs such as tree damage, dents on your car or siding, or you hear your neighbors discussing the repairs to their home, you may begin wondering if your home or roof has suffered similar damage. Unfortunately, getting up on your roof to check can be a dangerous task, and it can be hard to know what you’re looking for once you do get up there.

That’s when having a qualified local contractor can help. They can take a look at your roof to find the damage – things like bruised mats or loosened granules on your shingles. Because hail doesn’t always cause damage that is readily apparent, it’s easy to think you don’t have a problem until months later when water comes pouring in. Why? Because those loosened granules can begin to wash away with the next rain or wind storm. This exposes the damaged mat to the elements, which causes it to deteriorate faster, leaving you with a severely damaged roof.

A qualified local contractor can point out those areas of damage to you, and help you make the claim to your insurance agency. Once your claim has been approved, they can now handle the work, giving you the peace of mind you need in the form of warranties and local craftsmanship that let you know your home is in good hands. And even if your claim is denied, your contractor can help walk you through the appeal process, making recommendations such as when to appeal in case time is necessary to expose the damage and get you the money you need to fix the damage.

Beware the Storm Chaser

Unfortunately, local contractors aren’t the only ones you’ll find after a major storm. Out of state storm chasers are also likely to try to get hold of your insurance money – but not to help fix your roof. Storm chasers are just as they sound; they travel around the country following storms in order to cash in. They often offer no warranties on their work, and have no local ties to the community or references. They may also leave you hanging either in the beginning once they’ve gotten you to sign their contract, or in the middle of the job if another storm passes through a different area and they move on to cash in quickly.

Because they have no local ties, they may also leave the suppliers in a lurch, which in turn results in a lien on your home for materials you thought you’d already paid for. To avoid these problems, learn to identify a storm chaser by these markers:

  • Lack of local state driver’s license or license plate
  • Lack of state licensing or insurance for the work
  • Lack of local, recent references for past jobs
  • Lack of local, recent references for suppliers or manufacturers
  • High pressure sales techniques to try to get you to sign their contract guaranteeing them the work
  • Low rating at the Better Business Bureau
  • Illegal sales tactics, such as offering you a cut of the insurance money if you give them the job

Remember that out of state storm chasers aren’t there to help you; they’re there to make money off your misfortune, and they should be avoided at all costs.
