What To Do After a Hail Storm in Arlington, VA
If you live in Arlington, VA, you’ve probably experienced some harsh weather from time to time. The area is well known for its high winds and the hail storms that occasionally accompany them. And while you may not give much thought to how this weather can affect your roof, hail stones can do a lot of damage that isn’t always readily apparent. Make sure you get your roof inspected after a hail storm so you can take the steps necessary to get it repaired or replaced if need be.
Dealing with a Hail Storm
If you’ve had a hail storm hit your home, it can be a confusing and overwhelming time. You may notice damage such as dents on your car, and wonder what shape your roof is in. You may also see your neighbors beginning to have contractors coming out to assess their homes, which can leave you wondering if this is something you should be considering as well.
While hail storms can bring a lot of uncertainty, however, it’s best to be sure you’re prepared to take the steps necessary to protect your home. Hail can inflict a lot of damage on your roof – damage that might not be apparent right away, but that could lead to leaks and roof deterioration in the future.
Therefore, it’s in your best interests to get a qualified, local contractor out to take a look at your roof in a timely way. Then you can be sure you’re making the right decisions about things like repair or replacement, and making an insurance claim that will help pay for the work.
What Hail Stones Can Do
The reason you may not notice a problem right away is because the hail stones typically don’t leave very large damage behind. Instead, what they may do is either bruise the mat of your shingles, weakening them, or they may loosen up the protective layer of granules on the surface. After a few rain storms have washed these loosened granules away, your shingles will now be exposed to the elements, which causes them to deteriorate at a faster rate. This leads to things like water infiltration, mold, mildew, and leaks inside your home.
Because you may not see the bruised mat or the loosened granules, you may think that your roof is fine, when in reality it’s anything but. Having your roof inspected in a timely way means that you’ll know what kind of damage you’re looking at, and what kind of potential problems this could bring in the future.
Avoiding Storm Chasers
Your insurance company will likely pay to have your roof replaced if it has sustained damage in a hail storm. Unfortunately, this means that some unscrupulous people, known as storm chasers, may try to take advantage of this fact. Storm chasers come from out of state, following major storms around the country to take advantage of the opportunity this brings.
Storm chasers are likely to show up at your door, using high pressure sales techniques to get you to sign a contract guaranteeing them the work. Unfortunately, this means that they can delay work while they leave you hanging.
Out of state storm chasers also have no ties to the community, and may leave you with unfinished work or a lien on your home as they chase after a new storm. To ensure you don’t fall for their tactics, always ask to see:
- Driver’s license and license plate to establish community ties
- References from at least three recent jobs you can check in with
- Manufacturer or supplier references to ensure they have no outstanding liens against them, and that they are qualified to offer you extended warranties on materials
- Copies of state licenses and insurance
If your contractor can’t provide these things, then beware; they are likely a storm chaser who won’t be around to offer you warranties or follow up on their work if something goes wrong down the road.
