Hail Storms- Vienna, VA
Residents of Vienna, Virginia have seen their share of storms. Rainy springs, snowy winters, and wind speeds that are higher than the national average can all take their toll on your home. Unfortunately, it’s often the less frequently seen storms that can do the worst damage. That’s because things like hail storms don’t come around often enough for homeowners to learn the signs of damage, and what to do about them before more damage can occur.
Identifying Hail Damage
Many people don’t realize that hail storm has damaged their roofs if they can’t see very obvious damage, such as broken shingles or water pouring in from your ceiling. Hail storm damage is more subtle, however, and sometimes the damage doesn’t become evident right away. So homeowners who might be proactive about cleaning up their yards after a storm or repairing the visible damage might not take care of their roofs until it’s too late and more damage has occurred.
This is because unless the hail stones that strike your roof are the size of golf balls, the damage they leave might not be visible to the untrained eye.
When a hail stone strikes your roof, it bruises the mat or the underside of the shingle where you can’t see. This bruise damages your shingle, which could lead to your roof breaking down and allowing moisture to come in.
At the same time it bruises your shingles, the hail stone also loosens some of the granules on top of the shingles. These granules are what help protect your roof from the elements; without them your roof will begin to deteriorate.
Over time, those high winds and rainy springs that Vienna is so known for will wash away the loosened granules on your roof. Now your shingle will begin to break down, which will lead to water soaking through to your roof deck. Now things like mold, mildew, and wood rot will occur in your attic, even before the water comes through in such sufficient quantities to get your attention.
What a Qualified Local Contractor Offers
Hail storm strikes and the damage they leave aren’t always readily apparent if you don’t know what you’re looking for. So how can you tell if you need a roof replacement, or how to make this claim to your insurance agency? A good, qualified local contractor can help. Contractors can help you determine the scope of the damage, and assist you in your claim from being there when the adjuster makes their inspection to helping you file an appeal for a denied claim.
Qualified, local contractors also provide you with a sense of security that you’re trusting your home to the right person. Someone who is licensed, bonded, and insured with ties to the community and a history of references and past projects you can check up on. A qualified local contractor will also take care of your roof properly and ensure that you have the warranties necessary to back up their work.
Unfortunately, not every contractor you may meet after a storm is a qualified or local, and not all of them have your best interests at heart.
Identifying a Storm Chaser
When hail storms blow through Vienna, storm chasers are usually quick to follow. These contractors make their living traveling around the country following major storms. They’re looking to make a quick buck off of your misfortune, and are not looking out for your best interests. They have no ties to your community, and frequently offer no warranties on their labor because they leave town as soon as the work is done.
All of this means that you need to take care not to fall for the high pressure sales tactics and often illegal offerings they may bring. Qualified local contractors often have enough work that they aren’t going to come knocking on your door looking for work. So if a contractor does show up, refrain from signing anything until you ask for – and receive – the following:
- Driver’s license and license plate number so that you can determine that they are local and not from out of state
- State licensing and current insurance
- References from at least three recent jobs in the area that you can call and verify
- Manufacturer and supplier references so you can make sure that they are qualified to offer you manufacturer’s warranties and that they don’t have any liens against them from unpaid bills to suppliers
If your contractor can’t or won’t provide you with these things, it’s time to move on to someone else.
