Hail Storms Oakton, VA
Residents of Oakton, Virginia are well acquainted with storms and the type of damage they may bring to your home and yard. Unfortunately the type of storms that Oakton, VA usually receive, with high winds are rain, don’t really prepare you for the type of damage that a hail storm can bring. Hail storms leave significant, yet subtle damage to your roof, which can be hard to spot with the untrained eye. Be sure to have your roof inspected by a qualified local contractor after each hail storm to ensure you catch any damage done before it can get worse.
Why Hail Damage Often Goes Unnoticed
If you weren’t home when the hail storm occurred, you may not even realize that your home has been affected – that’s how subtle hail storm damage can be. This is because unless the stones that hit your home were the size of golf balls or larger, they may not being leaving behind damage that you can see until you know what it is you’re looking for.
When a hail stone strikes your roof, it essentially does two things, both of which may lead to more long term and widespread damage over time. First, when the hail stone strikes, it may bruise the mat of your shingle, which damages it.
Second, the hail stone may knock off or loosen some of the protective granules on top of your shingles. These granules protect your shingles from the elements, and once they’re gone the shingle may begin to deteriorate more quickly. Because the hail stone may only loosen them, you may not realize that the damage has been done until water begins to infiltrate your home. By the time you realize that something is wrong with your roof, you may be dealing with issues such as mold or wood rot, along with the water damage that a leaking roof can bring.
Because you may not be able to recognize the signs yourself, it’s important that you have a qualified local contractor out to view your roof after a hail storm has passed. Your contractor can help you determine how bad the damage was, and if you need to file an insurance claim to help pay for the repairs. If you do decide to file a claim, your contractor can assist you with this process, and help ensure that the adjuster sees the damage, even when it isn’t as obvious.
What Your Adjuster Is Looking For
In order to approve your insurance claim, your adjuster needs to follow a formula to determine how bad the damage was. Your adjuster isn’t looking at things like whether you could develop mold or water damage, or if the shingles are in the process of deteriorating; all he or she is looking for is a specific number of hail strikes per area.
During your insurance adjuster’s inspection, your roof will be divided into sections. Your adjuster will count the number of visible strikes per section; you need a specific number of strikes to have your claim approved. Your contractor has likely dealt with hundreds if not thousands of insurance claims, and can help you determine if you have enough strikes to warrant a claim, and can help point out those strikes that may not be as obvious as others.
Beware the Storm Chaser
Not every contractor you may meet after a hail storm is going to be qualified to handle your roof damage, or a local tradesman you can trust. Many contractors exist who travel the country, going after insurance claims on jobs filed after a big storm. These so-called storm chasers don’t care if your roof gets done correctly, if you have a warranty that will cover problems down the road, or even if your job gets finished at all; they simply want to collect the insurance money and move on.
To help ensure that you avoid them, always ask the following questions of any contractor you meet:
- Do you have a local driver’s license and license plate?
- Do you have relevant state insurance and licenses?
- What is your warranty – do you offer extended manufacturer’s warranties, and can we follow up with them?
- What is your rating at the Better Business Bureau?
- Do you have at least three, recent, local references we can call?
If your contractor isn’t able to provide you with this information to your satisfaction, it’s time to call another.
