Hail Storm Damage- Springfield, VA
Springfield, Virginia is well known for its stormy weather. Rainy springs, snowy winters, and wind speeds that are higher than the national average mean that Springfield residents are fairly accustomed to cleaning up after storm damage. Unfortunately, it’s the lesser known types of storm damage that truly need to be attended to. Hail storms may sometimes leave damage behind that isn’t as noticeable to the untrained eye. This doesn’t make it any less of a problem, though. The confusion surrounding what to do about hail storm damage may leave homeowners in a position where secondary damage can occur. This is why it’s so important to call a qualified local contractor every time a hail storm hits.
What Makes Hail Storm Damage So Problematic
Hail storms may leave behind some downed tree limbs, or maybe a few dents in your patio furniture. But unless the hail stones are the size of golf balls or larger, they may not leave behind much visible damage on your roof. This in turn leads homeowners to believe that the damage was not significant to pursue to file an insurance claim for.
Unfortunately, just because you can’t see the damage doesn’t mean that it isn’t there. When a hail stone strikes your roof, it damages it in two ways. First, it bruises the mat of the shingle, damaging it. Second, it loosens up some of the granules on the surface of the shingle. Over time, rain may wash away those loosened granules, exposing your shingle to the elements. This means that your shingle will begin to deteriorate more quickly.
Over time, this will lead to water beginning to infiltrate your home. Then things like black mold and wood rot can begin to take hold, along with the type of water damage that can occur when water begins to pour through your ceiling. And because this secondary damage doesn’t always occur right away, you may not attribute it to that hail storm damage that happened a few weeks to months before.
Getting Your Roof Inspected
Because it can be so difficult for you to tell for yourself if your roof has been damaged, it’s important that you get it inspected by a qualified local contractor after each storm. Your contractor has likely seen thousands of hail damaged roofs; he has the expertise and the eye necessary to determine the extent of the damage.
If your contractor finds the type of damage that can lead to more problems down the road, he may recommend you file an insurance claim to help cover the cost of the repairs. Unlike your car insurance, your homeowner’s premiums will not go up if you file a claim – but they will go up if enough of your neighbors do, even if you do not. Therefore it’s often in your best interests to file a claim and get your roof fixed before this other damage can occur.
Your qualified local contractor can not only assess your roof for you, he can also lead you through the insurance process from being there when the adjuster comes out to check the damage to helping you through the appeals process if necessary. Considering how difficult the claims process can be, having a qualified local contractor on hand becomes even more important.
Beware the Storm Chaser
It’s of equal importance that the contractor you hire for the job be qualified and local. This is because there is a group of contractors known as storm chasers who travel the country, following storms the insurance money that often follows.
Storm chasers are looking out for only one thing – their profit, and they do not care if your roof gets finished, finished properly, or if you have no one to contact afterward in case of a problem. They frequently offer no warranties, and may even leave you with a lien attached to your home in the form of unpaid supplier’s bills.
To ensure that you don’t fall for their tricks, be sure to ask for the following from every contractor you interview:
- A local driver’s license and license plate
- State licenses and insurance
- At least three recent references from local jobs
- Suppliers and manufacturer’s references
If your contractor is less than forthcoming with any of these, it may be time to find a new one.
