Hail Storm Annandale, VA: Good Contractors vs Storm Chasers

Hail Storm Annandale, VA- Good Contractors vs Storm Chasers

Residents of Annandale, VA are no strangers to the extreme and deep hail storms that sometimes sweep through the state. And while the hail storm can sometimes be brief and don’t always leave behind obvious damage, they could be taking a major toll on your roof. Every time a hail stone strikes your roof, it could be loosening up the granules that help protect it. And the next time it rains or another storm comes through, those granules can get washed away leaving your roof exposed and open to deterioration. That’s why you can sometimes find a lot of roof replacements within an area in the weeks following a storm. Learn why it’s important to choose your contractor with care if you think your roof is going to need repair or replacement after a storm, so you don’t end up in a worse position than you were to begin with.

What a Good Contractor Offers

If your home has come through a hail storm recently, you may not be able to tell if your roof has suffered damage or not. That’s because the hail strikes and damage they leave aren’t always readily apparent if you don’t know what you’re looking for. So how can you tell if you need a roof replacement, or how to make this claim to your insurance agency? A good, qualified local contractor can help. Contractors can help you determine the scope of the damage, and assist you in your claim from being there when the adjuster makes their inspection to helping you file an appeal for a denied claim.

Good contractors also provide you with a sense of security that you’re trusting your home to the right person. Someone who is licensed, bonded, and insured with ties to the community and a history of references and past projects you can check up on. A good contractor will also take care of your roof properly and ensure that you have the warranties necessary to back up their work.

Unfortunately, not every contractor you may meet after a storm is a good one, and not all of them have your best interests at heart.

Identifying a Storm Chaser

When hail storms blow through Annandale, storm chasers are usually quick to follow. These contractors make their living traveling around the country following major storms. They’re looking to make a quick buck off of your misfortune, and they are not looking out for your best interests. They have no ties to your community, frequently offer no warranties on their labor or extended manufacturer warranties as well, and may even leave your work partially undone if another storm pops up somewhere else before they’re through.

All of this means that you need to take care not to fall for the high pressure sales tactics and often illegal offerings they may bring. Qualified local contractors often have enough work that they aren’t going to come knocking on your door looking for work. So if a contractor does show up, refrain from signing anything until you ask for – and receive – the following:

  • Driver’s license and license plate number so that you can determine that they are local and not from out of state
  • State licensing and current insurance
  • References from at least three recent jobs in the area that you can call and verify
  • Manufacturer and supplier references so you can make sure that they are qualified to offer you manufacturer’s warranties and that they don’t have any liens against them from unpaid bills to suppliers

You should also take the time to check them out on the Better Business Bureau to see how they handle any potential complaints against them as well.

You’ll probably find that out of state storm chasers are unable to produce any of these things, while a local contractor can. Remember that an out of state storm chaser may leave you in worse shape than you were in the first place by:

  • Leaving before they finish the job
  • Not carrying the right insurance for the job
  • Failing to pay the supplier for materials and leaving a lien on your home unless you pay twice
  • Offering you a cut of the insurance money in exchange for getting the work, which is illegal and could result in penalties for you

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home; make sure you can trust the contractor working on it after a storm to ensure they do the job right.
