Centreville, VA: How Hail Damage Affects Your Roof
While the climate in Centreville, VA can certainly be moderate year-round, there are still times when big storms can roll through the area. And with these storms often come things like hail stones. If a hail storm hits your home, do you know what to do or what to look for? Hail stones can cause a lot of hail damage that isn’t always readily apparent. Make sure you know what to look for, and who to call if a hail storm hits your home so you can help prevent future damage from occurring.
Why Isn’t Hail Damage Immediately Apparent
One of the most confusing things for homeowners after a hail storm, is whether or not there is actually hail damage. No one wants to call a contractor or deal with their insurance company if they don’t have to, but how can you tell when the damage isn’t always immediately visible?
When hail stones strike your roof, they end up damaging it in two ways, neither of which can be seen right away with the untrained eye. The first type of damage occurs with the strike itself, with the hail stone bruising the mat beneath the shingle. This bruising means the shingle is now weaker, and may deteriorate faster leading to leaks and other issues down the road.
The second type of damage has to do with the granules on top of your shingles. These granules help protect the shingle, and when a hail stone hits them, it loosens them up. Since you can’t see that the granules are loosened unless you know what to look for, you might not notice the damage right away. Over time, rain, snow, and wind will begin to wash away the loosened granules, exposing the mat beneath. Now the elements can get directly at the mat of the shingle, causing it to deteriorate quickly. Now moisture from rain and snow can begin seeping into your home. This in turn leads to things like wood rot, mold, mildew, and water damage in your home. And if you don’t act right away, you may not be able to prove to the insurance company that hail was responsible for this damage, and they may not be able to help you.
Filing an Insurance Claim
Filing a claim can feel like a big challenge, but if you’ve had a qualified local contractor out to look at your roof, and they recommend that you get your roof repaired or replaced, then you need to make that call. You may worry about your premiums going up or your insurance company dropping you, but rest assured that a hail storm is considered an “Act of God” so they can’t drop you. And unlike your car insurance, your premiums won’t go up if you make a claim. But they could go up if everyone in your neighborhood makes a claim, whether you do or not, so it’s in your best interests to call.
Your contractor can help you with this by being present at the inspection, or helping you to determine whether or not you should appeal if denied. By hiring a local, qualified contractor from your community, they can assist you with the insurance process, and help you get your roof back into good shape before additional damage can occur.
Avoid the Storm Chaser
Unfortunately, not every contractor you see after a hail storm will be qualified and local. Some will be out of state storm chasers who are looking to make a quick buck on your misfortune. Avoid any contractor that shows up at your door with high pressure sales techniques trying to get you to sign. You should also avoid anyone without a local driver’s license or license plate, and without state licenses and insurance. This will help protect you, because out of state storm chasers often disappear once the work is done, leaving you with no warranty and no one to call in case of a problem.
