Hail Storm Damage In Northern Virginia
While the weather in Northern Virginia is usually fairly moderate, oftentimes big winds and storms can blow up out of nowhere bringing with them things like hail. Hail storms can cause major damage to your home and roof, even when it isn’t readily apparent after the storm. Learn the signs of hail damage, and how to minimize further damage while you wait for your insurance company’s inspection.
Signs of Damage after a Hail Storm
The signs of hail damage on your roof aren’t always readily apparent. In fact, if you weren’t home when the hail storm hit, you might never know that it passed through until you hear your neighbors discussing it or you start seeing work being done on their homes.
Unfortunately, hail can do a lot of damage that doesn’t show up until a few months down the road. This damage can lead to things like your roof shingles deteriorating more quickly, which in turn leads to things like leaks and water damage inside your home. It’s important, therefore, to determine whether or not you may have experienced hail damage so that you can get your insurance company and a Qualified Local Contractor involved as soon as possible.
The signs of hail damage aren’t always obvious, so if you see any of these things, be sure to have a qualified professional take a look:
- Hail stones in your yard
- Dents or dings on your car
- Dents or dings on your siding
- Cracks or holes in your skylights
- Leaks or water entering your home
- Fallen trees or lots of leaves and debris in your yard
If you see any of these signs around your home, then chances are that your roof has been damaged as well. Therefore, it’s important to call a qualified local contractor (QLC) as soon as possible to have the damage assessed on your roof. Your contractor can let you know whether or not there is enough damage for you to file a claim with your insurance company. They can also help you with the filing process, and take care of the repairs or replacement once your claim has been approved.
Finding the Right Contractor
There’s a strange phenomenon that sometimes occurs right after a hail storm; contractors begin showing up right on your doorstep asking you to sign contracts that will give them the right to work on your home. These storm chasing contractors do not have your best interests in mind; they’re simply after the insurance money and making as much as they can in a short period of time before they move on to the next storm.
Therefore, it’s important that you assess any contractor you come in contact with, whether they show up unannounced, or you give them a call. Find out and ask for the following from any contractor to help determine if they are qualified for the job:
- Local driver’s license and license plate – a lack of this means that they may be from out of state and therefore have no community ties
- Relevant state licensing and insurance – if they can’t prove they’re licensed to work in your state, then they are probably also no insured to work on your home
- References from previous satisfied customers – you should be able to receive references from at least three satisfied customers that you can call to verify their work
- References from manufacturers – find out if your contractor is able to provide you with manufacturer’s warranties, and make sure they have no liens against them from previously unpaid materials
A Qualified Local Contractor will be able to assist you through every step of the hail storm damage repair from assessing the damage to dealing with your insurance company. Don’t be fooled or taken in by storm chasers that may leave you with a half-finished roof or with liens attached to your property for non-payment of materials.
