Gutter Replacement: What You Should Know

Gutter Replacement: What You Should Know

Gutters help direct rain and water away from your roof and home. They fulfill an important role in helping to keep your home in good condition, so when they start to show signs that something isn’t working right, it may be time to consider replacing them. Gutter replacement is something that many homeowners need to consider at some point in time. Make sure you know the facts to ensure that you’re getting the right gutters for the job.

Do You Need Gutter Replacement?

Not all gutters that are having issues actually need to be replaced. Many gutters can be repaired by having only the damaged section replaced while the rest remain intact. This can be a significant savings, particularly if the problem is fairly localized.

If your gutters do need to be replaced, it’s generally because you either have widespread problems such as warping, or because your gutters are made of galvanized steel that is beginning to rust.

Gutter Anatomy

Your gutters are made up of five different parts. During a gutter replacement, you can generally assume that all parts will need to be replaced. During gutter repair work, you may have as few as just one of these replaced to correct the problem.

  • End Cap
  • Fascia Bracket
  • Downspout

Gutters can be made of several different materials – aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, zinc, or vinyl. Many contractors will recommend aluminum for most homes, simply because it lasts the longest without issues. If you have a historic home, however, and want to match some features, copper or zinc may be your best choice.

It is also not uncommon for some older homes to have custom and ornamental gutters, as these are often fairly prominent and easily seen. If the gutters you are replacing are decorative, you may want to invest in new gutters that can match the curb appeal of the old ones. Most older style gutters including ogee and beaded half-round gutters are still available, although it may put your cost at a premium to have them installed. It’s generally recommended that whenever possible you try to match the look and style of your old gutters when replacing them.

Gutter Replacement Costs

There is a large range of pricing when it comes to gutter replacement. This is due to several reasons including the size of your home, the material your gutters are made from, and the area you live in. National averages on gutter replacement pricing range from about $1200 to $1500, but could go significantly higher for specialty materials like copper that run about $18 a foot for material alone. To get the most accurate pricing for your home, be sure to have an estimate done by a qualified local contractor.

Protect Your Home

Having gutters in good working order can help protect your home from rain and moisture problems. Don’t let a leaking gutter system get your property down; invest in quality gutter replacement as soon as possible to help maintain your home’s condition.
